History and Faculties
Tel Aviv University is the largest university in Israel; it has 9 faculties ( Engineering, Exact Sciences, Life Sciences, Medicine, Humanities, Law, Social Sciences, Arts and Management) and over 80 research institutes. In 1963, after bureaucratic and organizational obstacles were overcome, Tel Aviv University got full autonomy, and the Ramat-Aviv campus was established. On the premises there are many buildings for the different faculties and departments, and lawns where students sit during the break, enjoying the sun.
Tel Aviv University has a wide range of programs in different fields of study. Physics, Business School, Humanities, Cinema Studies, and more, The University tries to combine academic standards with popular needs, constantly offering new educational programs. For example, the department of Film and Television in Tel Aviv University has educated some of the most important film makers in Israel today. This emphasizes the multi-disciplinary attitude in Tel Aviv University, encouraging achievement in different fields of interest.
Oversea Students
In addition, Tel Aviv University tries to help promote social understanding and awareness, from the strategic, economical and historical aspects (among others). Promoting the peace process in Israel and reaching better understanding of the politics and society in the Middle East, is one of the University's main goals.
Many students from abroad come to study in the Tel Aviv University, in The Lowy School for Oversea Students. The university offers different programs aimed at introducing Jewish and Israeli Culture, Language and History. The university also has a notable MA program in Middle Eastern studies.
Apart from lectures open to the general public, temporary exhibitions, and the university's central library, you can also find a very good bookshop just outside the main entrance. The shop is called "Dionon" and has a marvelous selection of books in English, Hebrew and other languages.
