Directed by the distinguished conductor Zubin Mehta, the Philharmonic Orchestra has earned its reputation along the years.
The Israeli Orchestra was established in 1936 under the name Palestine Orchestra. The orchestra was composed of Jewish musicians from orchestras all over Europe, who were persuaded by the Polish violinist Bronislaw Huberman to come to Israel and establish its first orchestra. They manage to flee Europe just before the outbreak of WWII. Israel was barely a country back then, but at least there was music. Since then the orchestra has established its reputation, and has recieved the name the Philharmonic Orchestra. Zubin Mehta, the orchestra's acclaimed conductor, performed for the first time with the group in 1961. Since 1969 he has been the Philharmonic's musical director, a position which has been given to him for life. The Philharmonic Orchestra has been fortunate enough to receive visits by renowned musicians such as Mstislav Rostropovic, Itzhak Perlman and Daniel Barnboim, and Israeli audiences were ablr to enjoy the genius of these exceptional talents.
