Photography: AKphotos (sxc) December really has to be a favourite worldwide, what with Christmas, Hanukkah (holidays of all other religions) and the start of a fresh new year.
Hanukkah
22-29 December 2008
Usually at the same time as Christmas, Hanukkah is one of the favourite holidays with children. True, there is no great Christmas tree, no red stockings and no hohoing Santa Clause, but there are candles, donuts, presents and 8 days off school. Hanukkah is the celebration of a miracle. Traditionally, the myth is that after the Israelites fought against the Greeks and recaptured the temple, there was only one little vessel of oil left in order to light the temple and re-establish the work of God. Miraculously, this tiny amount of oil, that shouldn't have lasted more than a day, lasted for eight days, until more oil could be prepared for the temple. So, the holiday's elements all concern light and oil, to commemorate and celebrate the miracle which took place in Israel bringing the Hashmonaim to power during the Hellenistic Period.
Sylvester Eve
31st December 2008
Though not exactly on the same scale as other countries, Israel celebrates the beginning of the Christian year, which is simply referred to as Sylvester. On this evening, the main thing is parties and fireworks - not a big surprise. All the bars and cafes have special events and clubs hold big parties. It is a little difficult if Sylvester turns out to be on a weekday, since the following day is a working day in Israel. But still, people find a way. Most restaurants have a special New Year's feast, usually including the best of the chef's creations and plenty of Champaign – make sure you book in advance.
