Signaling the end of one year and the beginning of the next, December finally brings winter to the city of Tel Aviv (though the cold does not bite and the sun still appears quite often). This month's highlight is Hannukah - the ultimate Jewish alternative to Christmas
Hanukkah
21-28 December 2011
Usually occurring at the same time as Christmas, Hanukkah is a favorite holiday with children. True, there is no great Christmas tree, no red stockings and no hohoing Santa Clause, but there are candles, donuts, presents and 8 days off school. Hanukkah is the celebration of a miracle. Traditionally, the myth is that after the Israelites fought against the Greeks and recaptured the temple, there was only one little vessel of oil left to light the temple and re-establish the ritual. Miraculously, this tiny amount of oil, that shouldn't have lasted more than a day, lasted for eight days, until more oil could be prepared. So, the holiday's elements all concern light and oil, to commemorate and celebrate the miracle which took place in the Land of Israel and brought the Hashmonaim to power during the Hellenistic Period.
Tel Aviv offers a wide selection of children's events during the Hannukah holiday, including theatre shows, family activities, special children oriented exhibitions at the museums and more. From the culinary perspective, cafes and bakeries throughout the city will be offering an amazing selection of creative doughnuts with a variety of special fillings.
Sylvester Eve
31st December 2011
Though not exactly on the same scale as other countries, Israel celebrates the beginning of the Christian year, which is simply referred to as "Sylvester". On this evening, the main thing is parties and fireworks - not a big surprise. All the bars and cafes have special events and the major clubs hold big parties. It is a little difficult if Sylvester turns out to be on a weekday, since the following day is a working day in Israel. But still, people find a way. Most restaurants have a special New Year's feast, usually including the best of the chef's creations and plenty of Champagne – make sure you book well in advance.
Have we missed anything? Please write us a detailed comment and your event will be added to our December listing (if appropriate)!
