This truly legendary café, which is situated at the very heart of Tel Aviv, draws a loyal and extremely eclectic clientele. A café which is a Tel Avivian institution If you come to the Mersand café on Friday, you will find the café swarming with people of all ages and styles: a table of old men in their late 70’s sipping black coffee and chatting about the olden days beside a table of ultra-cool youngsters, wearing the vintage clothes the wives of the men at the old people’s table chucked out years ago and sipping their first beer. The atmosphere is lively, the waiters and waitresses tend to daydream but will always give you a smile, and alternating amateur DJs play their very own kind of music in the background. On weekdays, the café is naturally more laidback and people come over to have a coffee and a chat, pass the morning hours in front of their laptops or read the philosophy book they’ll be tested on in a couple of weeks. The café has been open for over fifty years (!) and when the current owner took over, he made a point of leaving things as they were – keeping the name and the interior as is and just adding a contemporary touch which has made the cafe a favorite with locals and tourists. Besides the excellent coffee, you will find a wide selection of light meals on the menu – breakfasts, sandwiches, salads and such – and a selection of homemade cakes that are presented in a glass casing for customers to choose from. In the evenings, the café hosts a selection of interesting, and at times bizarre musical performances – make sure to ask about the upcoming performances when you’re there. The owners also have a second, no less charming café, on King George Street, called Baccio. There you will find a more café-like atmosphere and a wide selection of homemade ice-creams to choose from.
