If you decide to take a plunge and try the Jewish East-European cuisine, Batya cafe is one of the best options.

Cafe Batya is a very pleasant and friendly restaurant located in the north of Tel Aviv. Since 1941, it has been famous for its Chopped Liver, Goulash and wonderful Apple Strudel. It's usually quite packed out on weekends, but any other day of the week shouldn't be a problem.  On Saturday lunch people pack the restaurant for the lunchtime Chulent feast, after which a long rest in bed is a must.
There is also a small bar attached to the main part of the restaurant, if you prefer this sort of surroundings.
